This is the second of my series of three rings for my final project this semester. It's part of "The Hunt" series incorporating my Grandma Myrt's found objects from her hunt.
I used a ring tube blank in blue hard wax to start the process of sizing the ring and creating the thickness of the overall design. Carving takes practice and a lot of patience since you're trying you're best not to break through the thin parts of the metal. I think this was particularly successful because I felt the zen moment throughout the carving process.
As you can see, this is definitely going to be a bold statement ring. Once I cast it in sterling silver and epoxy the pheasant feathers to the headdress, I think it will be very like the ancient headdresses of either the Mayans or the Incas. I hadn't really had these in mind when carving them, but the shape is very reminiscent of those influences. I guess you could say the ancient hunter was with me while I worked.
There is still a little bit of cleanup left before I sprue and invest the model for casting, but I'm hoping to have it done soon.
What do you think so far?
